Firex and IFSEC International 2018, London ExCel
As in previous years, the LPCB Red Book Pavilion was a prominent feature of Firex International at London Excel on 19 - 21 June, and this year we also had a Pavilion in the IFSEC show. All three days were extremely busy, which was evident in the level of ambient noise! As ever, our Red Book listings were of interest to specifiers such as insurers, facilities managers and consultants.
FIREX delegates were particularly interested in our new suppression standards:-
LPS 1283 – Watermist systems for use in commercial low hazard occupancies
LPS 1655 – Personal protection water mist systems
We took the opportunity to present Beijing VSAIL Fire Protection with an LPCB certificate for their VI-6847 4 loop Control and Indicating panel.
We were heavily involved in the conference programme, with presentations taking place in the FIREX Expertise & Guidance theatre. Click on the links below to view a pdf of the presentations.
The ‘LPCB Attack Zone’ had grown considerably following the success of the 2017 event, and we tested more than twice as many products this year. These included:
The live testing was witnessed by well over 600 delegates, including many specifiers and advisory bodies from around the world.
The testing demonstrated the benefits of specifying tested and approved security products – illustrating that it is not possible to determine a product’s likely resistance based on looks alone. We also took the opportunity to describe the differences between commonly specified façade security standards, such as LPS1175, EN1627 and PAS24, and explain different environments in which each would be the most applicable to specify. Free copies of our guide to Façade security standards were also available for visitors to take away.
In addition, new certificates were presented to:-

BRE Global had two stands – one in the Fire Hall and the other in the Security Hall.
The show was very busy over all three days reflecting the major projects underway in the region, such as the World Cup stadia in Qatar and the Dubai Expo 2020. It was good to see the increase in numbers of LPCB certification marks being displayed around the exhibition, and a steady demand for applications due to the strength of the brand in the region. Our Suppression and Fire Detection teams were constantly in demand and reported a very good level of potential business to be evaluated and followed up. The security team were also busy during the show taking several positive potential business enquiries.
The security team also hosted two security seminars, supported by several LPCB client companies, where attack testing demonstrations took place. Feedback was excellent with major specifiers stating that they will now require LPS 1175 for physical security, and are also considering using SABRE. More attack testing demonstrations are likely to take place in the region going forward.
UK Security Expo, 29-30 November, London

Lord West of Spithead, former UK Security Minister, and attracted high calibre supporters such as Nactso, the Metropolitan Police and the British Transport Police. The exhibition had a number of very well attended theatres covering topics that included: Aviation & Border Security, Global Counter Terrorism, Designing Out Terrorism, Critical National Infrastructure, Maritime & Transport Security, Major Events & Stadium Security, Protecting Crowded Places, Cyber Security, and Counter Terrorism for Building & Facilities Management. There were also briefings on ‘Safer Cities’, a series of presentations in the Technology Workshop and a drone area.
At this very busy event the team were able to meet with a wide range of manufacturers, consultants, regulators and influencers, including representatives of Germany’s Foreign Ministry to whom they explained benefits of LPS1175 and the Red Book. Gavin Jones presented on SABRE and also took part in a panel discussion that followed in the Designing Out Terrorism theatre.
Bob Stephens presented on the challenges of using existing national and international explosion and ballistic resistant product standards in the context of current and emerging threats. Bob highlighted the challenges faced by manufacturers and specifiers when deciding appropriate standards, particularly in relation to scope and threats not covered by the standards. He gave examples of where manufacturers had promoted products that were outside the scope of the standards, and provided suggestions of what specifiers should look out for when reviewing manufacturers' claims.
We also took the opportunity to present a certificate to Zaun for their SR3 ‘Corrusec’ fence to LPS 1175: Issue 7.
