Intelligent Buildings

Intelligent building solutions offer substantial benefits to businesses.

 We offer a range of services to the intelligent building community. These include:

• Guidance on the wide range of regulations and directives applicable to intelligent buildings and systems.
• Product testing and certification, consultancy, training and intelligent building assessment.

We seek to facilitate the development and adoption of effective intelligent building systems within the built environment in order to realise the environmental, social and financial benefits that intelligent buildings are capable of delivering. We will do this through the development of specific solutions and standards for intelligent buildings and systems.

The primary benefits of intelligent building solutions include their operational responsiveness and flexibility. So called integrated systems break down the traditional silo solution culture, and can provide integrated, single point control of:

• Information and communications networks including data transfer and telephony
• The building environment: HVAC, lighting and electrical equipment;
• Energy management: integrated energy management across buildings, estates and campuses;
• Security systems: CCTV, access control and intrusion detection;
• Critical systems: building safety and protection of building occupants;
• Asset management: tracking and monitoring  of physical assets and personnel.

The significant benefits of integrated building service and asset management operations are much enhanced by the ability to manage systems both locally and remotely , often using TCP/IP and the internet.
This can significantly reduce operational management costs, adding to the whole life performance benefits of integrated services.

Application of intelligent building solutions brings other significant benefits that cannot be readily realised, if at all, with traditional technologies, for example the ability to rezone areas of a building to redistribute service delivery without relocating hardware, wiring and the associated disruption and cost.

This responsiveness is not limited to cost effective control of buildings - intelligent buildings can respond quickly to changing business demands and environmental requirements, or whatever demands are placed on them.

Our aims are:

• To improve awareness and understanding through education and training for all levels of stakeholders within the intelligent building community
• To provide independent quantification and confirmation of the environmental, social and financial benefits arising from intelligent building systems.
• To carry out research and advise policy makers (including industry and standards committees) in order to contribute to policies and the direction of the intelligent building market
• To present nationally and internationally recognised intelligent building events through our sister company BRE
• To establish a fixed built asset, for the demonstration and quantitative evaluation of future intelligent building systems

BRE is a Certified KNX/EIB training centre. We run regular training courses, including one day overview courses and five day Konnex/EIB certified courses.
BRE can also provide tailored courses to meet specific client needs. These courses are part of a wide range of training and seminar events for the building management and the wider built environment.  See here for full details.
