Our History
Our organisation traces its origins and experience back more than a century. Many years before national building regulations, quality assurance or organised standards-writing activity had begun fire insurers introduced the concept of third-party approvals for fire sprinkler equipment. The approach was extended to sprinkler system installers and to other systems and equipment over time.
In addition to regulating the insurance market, it developed and published technical specifications, codes, rules and standards for manufacturers and end users, and provided a testing and approval service.
LPCB came into being in the late 1980s following a reorganisation of the insurance trade bodies. The FOC technical documents became Loss Prevention Council rules and standards, and the approval schemes became Loss Prevention Standards (LPS). LPCB then joined BRE Certification (now BRE Global Ltd) on 31 March 2000.
The BRE Global, globe represents the differing areas of our business:
Our business group areas link together to achieve our mission statement: Protect People, Property and the Planet.
BRE Global Limited is custodian of a number of world leading brands including:

- BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) BREEAM is the world’s longest standing and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable development and demonstrates a level of achievement. It has become the vocabulary used to describe a building's environmental performance.
