LPCB stands for Loss Prevention Certification Board – a certification brand of BRE Global Limited (formerly known as BRE Certification Limited), a wholly owned trading subsidiary of the BRE trust (a registered research charity).
The Red Book is a world renowned listing of independently certified products or company services, and is the essential reference for those responsible for the design, specification and purchase of fire and security products.
The LPCB approval process uses existing standards as the basis for listing. However, where no standards exist, innovative products are approved by drawing on the experience of scientists, engineers and expert groups to devise a suitable assessment regime for the product or service concerned.
Loss Prevention Standards (LPS) are developed initially by our experts with input from external experts, before they are published in draft form. They are then independently scrutinised by experts and industry representatives including trade bodies, regulators, insurers, designers, manufacturers and installers.
Our Loss Prevention Standards have been incorporated into other British, European and International Standards including:
• British Standards (BS)
• International (ISO)
• European (EN)
• Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
The ‘approval’ process starts with rigorous assessment and type testing of products and services to ensure that they meet defined quality standards. Approval of the products listed is usually based on testing undertaken at our world renowned testing laboratories. In addition, we carry out regular detailed checks of production, processing, installation, and maintenance activities (as appropriate).
We believe our marks stand for something special - they are true 'quality marks' and are recognised across the world. We also offer something that no other UK based product Certification Body offers – transparency. The Red book is accessed by many thousands of specifiers across the world, either through direct mail, via distribution at exhibitions, events and trade missions or via this website.
LPCB / BRE Global approves products and services by checking that they meet the required standards, and ensuring that companies manage their processes properly. In turn, LPCB/BRE Global is assessed by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for most approval processes. UKAS checks that we are doing our approval work correctly, and when satisfied issues us with a certificate. Certificates issued under our UKAS Accreditation will show a mark which includes the UKAS crown and tick.
