The role of codes, standards and approvals in delivering fire safety

A new BRE Information Paper (IP 5/16) identifies the key processes used to test and certificate fire suppression products. It discusses the risks of assuming compatibility between different codes and standards, which may ultimately impact on the safety of both people and property. Read more

IFSEC 2017 - new area on infrastructure and border control

BRE Global is working with the UK and Europe’s largest security exhibition, IFSEC International 2017 (on 20-22 June at the London ExCel) on the brand new IFSEC Borders & Infrastructure area. For the first time, this provides a focused area dedicated to the protection of national infrastructure and border control. Read more

Tyco merges with Johnson Controls

Fire and security system company Tyco - which has a very extensive range of approved products listed on RedBookLive - completed a merger with Johnson Controls on 2 September. Their aim is to create the world leader in integrated building technology and energy storage. Read more

Great Fire of London 350th anniversary

This month’s exhibitions and events marking the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, which started early on 2 September 1666, culminated in the burning of a 120-metre-long sculpture of 17th-century London. The Museum of London’s Great Fire of London website, tracks the course of the fire.

Mobility scooter fires: Sprinklers can save lives

London housing provider, Lewisham Homes, has partnered with the London Fire Brigade, BRE and the British Automatic Sprinkler Association to carry out world-first experiments in fire safety. The tests examined how effective residential sprinkler systems are at suppressing mobility scooter fires. Read more

 

ABI calls for compulsory sprinklers in warehouses

Chair of the Business Sprinkler Alliance, Iain Cox, has welcomed the ABI’s call to make sprinklers compulsory in UK warehouses, commenting, “Our research with BRE and Cebr found that, from warehouse fires alone, businesses lose over £230m annually, in addition to nearly 1000 jobs”. Read more
