New Dubai Civil Defence requirement

We have been informed by Dubai Civil Defence that system approval is now also required alongside product approval where the products form part of a system. Examples of this are fire detection and alarm systems, cladding systems etc. We do not have any further information at this stage but will keep you informed. The contact point at Civil Defence is:

New test rig for steel beam fire protection systems

Installed to provide testing services to manufacturers of fire protection systems - such as intumescent paints, epoxy coatings, cementitious coatings, board products and ceramic blanket coverings - a newbeam loading rig at BRE can apply loads of up to 1000kN on a protected steel beam under fire testing conditions. LPS 1277 Issue 4 just released

LPS 1277 has been re-issued at issue 4 to reference current EN 50136 alarm transmission (ATS) standards. The EN standards, whilst improved, still do not always fully meet specifiers’ requirements especially for higher risk installations. For a summary of the changes to LPS 1277, click here

Reminder of the CE marking requirements for cables and fire doors

The product standards for cables (EN 50575) and fire doors (EN 16034) have again been cited - on 11 November 2015 – in the Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union. Cables placed on the European market must be CE marked by 1 July 2017, and fire doors by 1 September 2019. BRE Global is ready to help manufacturers with their testing programmes. Read more

UKAS accreditation for more fire protection products

BRE Global now has UKAS accreditation for a wide range of additional passive fire protection products including insulating panes, pedestrian doorsets, smoke and heat control systems, and power, control and communication cables. Read more

Fires in ventilation and cladding systems - expert presentations

Two presentations focussing on fires in ventilation and cladding systems were recently given by Steve Howard, Passive Fire Business Group Manager, to the Nuclear Ventilation Forum November organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Association of Insurance Surveyors (click to see the presentations).

Promoting LPCB certificated products in the ASEAN region

LPCB International Director, Graham Orme, and Regional Manager for ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Josephine Wong, have been promoting LPCB certificated products to a number of organisations during tours of Indonesia and Malaysia. Read more

In the news

One sprinkler saves building

On 28 December, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to a well-known retail store in a large shopping mall in Paisley. Three pumps and an aerial ladder went to the three-storey, 90M x 40M building where a fire had occurred in a ceiling-mounted light in the first floor staff area. On arrival it was found that one pendant sprinkler head had operated and extinguished the fire.  Read more

Safety concerns raised over false alarms

A councillor from Bournemouth has raised concerns about the safety of local residents after it was revealed fire crews attended a local suburb 280 times in the last year. Of these call outs, 152 were due to false alarms, leading to a warning from Cllr Stanley-Watts that the residents of Boscombe were being put at risk. Read more
