Irish company approved to LPS 1531

PFP Fire Systems has become the first LPS 1531 approved installer of passive fire protection products in the Republic of Ireland. The certification of this global leader in passive fire protection services for the tunnel and commercial construction sectors, reflects the continued success and spreading influence of LPS 1531. The role of fire technologies research in shaping standards

A European conference in Berlin this month considered the fire technologies research that could shape future standards. Speakers included Raman Chagger, Principal Consultant in Fire Detection at BRE, who gave two presentations, one on the test fires used to assess smoke detectors and the second on visual alarm devices and their effectiveness in warning of fire. Technical seminar in Hong Kong

Jenny Morris, BRE Global Certification Manager for Cables, supported one of our approved clients by attending and presenting at a technical seminar for the Association of Registered Fire Service Installation Contractors of Hong Kong. Jenny’s presentation focussed on the importance of independent third party certification, the BS Code of Practice 8519 and its installation guidelines. This was followed by a technical Q&A session.

TechConnect India

Kamil Hamid, BRE Global Country Manager for India, attended the TecConnect seminar at Bengaluru, India on 3 February. The event was a joint initiative of Secutech and Fire & Safety India to provide a platform for presenting and discussing innovation in the Indian fire and security industries. It was opened by the Deputy Director of Karnataka State Fire & Emergency Services, and the Maharashtra Fire Services Director was the VIP guest on the panel. (Image, courtesy of FPAI.)

Event reports

Intersec Dubai, 22-24 January 2017

Intersec is the largest fire and security exhibition in the world, hosting more than 1,280 exhibitors and welcoming visitors from 127 countries. We had two stands – one in the Fire Hall and the other in the Security Hall. The show was very busy over all three days, reflecting the major projects underway in the region, such as the World Cup stadia in Qatar and the Dubai 2020 World Fair. Read more

In the news

London Bridge underground station fire reminds us of the importance of sprinklers

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters were called to London Bridge Underground Station on 31 January after an escalator caught fire. Fire crews were called to reports of smoke coming from a motor underneath an escalator. The station’s sprinkler system operated and quickly contained the fire, the London Fire Brigade said, evading a much larger event and potentially saving lives. Read more

Lives saved due to smoke alarms

Certificated domestic smoke alarms fitted in the wake of a fatal house fire in Swindon saved the lives of two people living nearby when a blaze broke out. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the property, but thanks to smoke alarms the alarm was quickly raised and two people escaped uninjured. Read more
